EDITORS COMMENTS
In this aerial photograph, the Orchard and Joyce Green smallpox hospitals in Dartford, Kent, stand proudly against the backdrop of the English countryside. Designed by architects A & C Harston, these hospitals were built to provide essential care for those affected by smallpox in the early 20th century. The Orchard Hospital, located in the foreground, was opened in 1902 as a temporary structure using wooden huts. Its name was inspired by the orchards that once covered the area around Long Reach, Dartford. The hospital was intended to be a temporary solution to the growing need for smallpox isolation facilities, as the disease continued to spread across the region. The Joyce Green Hospital, which opened in 1903, can be seen in the rear of the photograph. This hospital had a unique echelon layout, which allowed for better ventilation and improved isolation of patients. The layout consisted of a series of pavilions arranged in a zigzag pattern, with each pavilion connected to the next by covered walkways. Despite their intended temporary nature, both hospitals played a crucial role in the fight against smallpox in Kent. They were connected by a tramway, which allowed for the efficient transport of supplies and personnel between the two sites. The Orchard Hospital was eventually closed in the 1930s, while Joyce Green continued to operate until the 1960s, when the smallpox vaccine became widely available and the need for dedicated smallpox hospitals declined. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of public health care in England, and the innovative architectural solutions that were developed to address the challenges of treating infectious diseases. The Orchard and Joyce Green hospitals stand as testament to the dedication and ingenuity of those who worked to protect the health of their communities during a time of great need.
