EDITORS COMMENTS
Joshua Halts the Sun: A Miraculous Intervention in Biblical History This evocative image captures the moment when Joshua, the leader of the Israelites, intervenes with the natural world to buy himself and his army more time to pursue and destroy their enemies, the Gibeonites. According to the Old Testament of the Bible, the Gibeonites had deceived Joshua and the Israelites into making a peace treaty with them, despite their being from a rival tribe. Fearful of the consequences of breaking their word, Joshua felt compelled to honor the treaty, much to the frustration of his soldiers who were eager to engage in battle. However, when the Gibeonites learned that the Israelites were marching towards them, they quickly regretted their deceit and sought a way to make amends. They sent a large delegation to Joshua, bearing gifts and pleading for mercy. Realizing that he had been tricked, Joshua was filled with anger and determination to destroy the Gibeonites. Desperate for more time to plan and execute his attack, Joshua turned to the heavens for help. The Bible relates that he "lifted his hand to the sun and the sun stood still in the middle of the sky, holding back the progression of the sun for about a full day." (Joshua 10:12-13) This miraculous intervention allowed Joshua and his army to catch the Gibeonites off guard and ultimately defeat them. This historical print, from the vast collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a captivating visual representation of this biblical story. The image of Joshua, arms outstretched towards the sun, conveys a sense of determination and divine intervention. The sun, suspended in the sky, adds an otherworldly quality to the scene, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of this event in ancient history.
