EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Josephus Daniels, an American political figure of great significance during the early 20th century. Daniels served as the Secretary of the U.S. Navy from 1912 to 1920, a period marked by major advancements in naval technology and military strategy. Born on February 17, 1862, in Washington, North Carolina, Daniels began his political career as a journalist and later became a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was a member of the Democratic Party and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1899 to 1901 and in the U.S. Senate from 1905 to 1913. Daniels' tenure as Secretary of the Navy saw the expansion of the U.S. Navy, with the commissioning of new battleships and the implementation of new technologies such as submarines and aircraft carriers. He also oversaw the construction of the first U.S. submarine base at New London, Connecticut. Daniels' leadership during World War I was marked by his commitment to maintaining a strong naval presence in European waters, which helped to deter German U-boat attacks on American merchant ships. He also played a key role in the development of the Naval Consultative Committee, which coordinated naval efforts between the United States and its allies. After leaving the Navy Department, Daniels continued to be active in politics and served as the United States Ambassador to Mexico from 1933 to 1936. He passed away on December 13, 1948, leaving behind a rich legacy as a dedicated public servant and a key figure in American naval history.
