EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the biblical figure of Joseph (17th century), the favored son of Jacob, falsely accused and imprisoned by Potiphar's wife. Despite the injustice he had suffered, Joseph's exceptional gift for interpreting dreams would ultimately lead to his release and restoration to power. In this print, Joseph, dressed in the attire of a prison inmate, sits in contemplative solitude, his gaze fixed on the ground. The somber atmosphere of the cell is contrasted by the vibrant colors and intricate details of the surrounding decorative elements, which speak to the richness and complexity of the historical narrative. The chief cup-bearer and the chief baker, both high-ranking officials in the Egyptian court, are depicted in the foreground, their heads bowed in deep thought as they recall the dreams that Joseph had once interpreted for them. The cup-bearer, on the left, is shown with a gleaming golden cup in hand, signifying his position as the royal wine steward. The baker, on the right, is depicted with a loaf of bread and a rolling pin, symbolizing his role as the royal baker. The dreams that Joseph had interpreted for them had foretold their fates: the cup-bearer would be restored to his position and remember to mention Joseph's abilities to Pharaoh, while the baker would be hanged. True to the prophecies, the cup-bearer's head was lifted in a positive way, as he was pardoned and reinstated, while the baker's head was lifted in a negative way, as he was executed. This historical print, with its intricate details and rich symbolism, offers a captivating glimpse into the biblical narrative of Joseph's time in prison and the events that followed, making it a valuable addition to any collection of religious or historical art.
