EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the biblical story of Joseph interpreting Pharaoh's dreams in the Old Testament of the Bible. Joseph, one of Jacob's twelve sons and the favorite of his father, was sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers. However, through a series of events, Joseph rose to become a trusted advisor to Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt. Pharaoh was troubled by two disturbing dreams that left him perplexed and anxious. In the first dream, he saw seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean cows. In the second dream, he saw seven healthy ears of grain swallowed by seven scorched ears. Joseph, who had been gifted with the ability to interpret dreams, was summoned to the palace to explain their meaning. With wisdom and clarity, Joseph revealed to Pharaoh that the dreams were prophetic. The seven fat cows and seven healthy ears represented seven years of abundance and prosperity, while the lean cows and scorched ears symbolized seven years of famine and scarcity. Pharaoh was impressed by Joseph's insight and wisdom, and he appointed him as the second in command of Egypt, putting him in charge of preparing for the upcoming seven years of famine. This powerful image captures the moment of revelation, as Joseph shares the meaning of Pharaoh's dreams with the king and his courtiers. The intricate details of the print, from the ornate robes and headdresses to the expressive faces of the characters, bring the story to life and transport us back to ancient Egypt. This print is not only a beautiful work of art, but also a reminder of the enduring power of faith, wisdom, and the human spirit.
