Agathon, born Jean-Baptiste Gonlieu, was a Capuchin friar who dedicated his life to the service of the Catholic Church. His pious demeanor and unwavering commitment to his faith earned him the esteem of his fellow clergy and the admiration of the people. Born in the region of Poitou in western France, Agathon joined the Capuchin Order at a young age and was ordained a priest in 1761. He quickly gained a reputation for his piety and his ability to perform miracles. Agathon was known to have the gift of healing, and many people sought him out for spiritual guidance and physical healing. Despite the tumultuous political climate of late 18th century France, Agathon remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to the needs of his flock. During the French Revolution, when religious institutions were under attack, Agathon and other Capuchin friars were forced to flee their monasteries. He spent the final years of his life in hiding, continuing to offer spiritual guidance to those who sought him out.
