EDITORS COMMENTS
"This image depicts the biblical story of Jonah being released from the belly of the whale, as illustrated in various historical and religious texts. The Old Testament Book of Jonah recounts the tale of Jonah, a prophet of the God of Israel, who was commanded by God to go to the city of Nineveh and warn its inhabitants to repent of their wicked ways. Fearing this task, Jonah boarded a ship to Tarshish instead, but a great storm arose at sea, and the sailors, upon discovering Jonah's deception, threw him overboard to save themselves. The sea creature, traditionally identified as a whale, swallowed Jonah whole, and he remained inside for three days and three nights. Upon Jonah's release from the whale's belly, as depicted in this print, he was reportedly carried back to the shores of Nineveh, where he carried out God's command and warned the city of impending destruction. The people of Nineveh repented, and God spared them. This powerful story of redemption and obedience to God's will has been retold for centuries and continues to resonate with people of various faiths and cultures around the world." This beautiful print, with its intricate details and rich colors, offers a glimpse into the history and symbolism of this ancient story. The image, held by Mary Evans Picture Library from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a testament to the enduring power of the biblical narrative and the human capacity for forgiveness and transformation.
