EDITORS COMMENTS
John Philip Holland (1841-1914), an Irish-American inventor, is depicted in this historic photograph taken in 1914. Holland is best known for his pioneering work in the development of the first practical submarine for the United States Navy. Born in Liscannor, County Clare, Ireland, Holland immigrated to the United States in 1870 and began working as a teacher in New York City. In his spare time, Holland became fascinated with the idea of creating an underwater vessel that could be used for military purposes. He spent years experimenting with various designs, eventually creating a full-scale model of his submarine, which he named the "Holland VI." The submarine, which measured 27 feet long and had a crew of three, was powered by a gasoline engine and could dive to a depth of 75 feet. In 1897, Holland's submarine design was accepted by the United States Navy, and he was contracted to build a full-scale submarine for the military. The first submarine, named the "Holland No. 1," was launched on October 17, 1900, and was successfully tested in New York Harbor. Holland continued to refine his designs, and in 1911, the USS Holland (SS-1), the first submarine to be commissioned by the U.S. Navy, was launched. Holland's submarines would go on to play a crucial role in naval warfare during both World War I and World War II. In this photograph, Holland, who is wearing a moustache and spectacles, is shown in a thoughtful pose, deep in contemplation, likely reflecting on his groundbreaking inventions and their impact on military history. The photograph is a testament to Holland's ingenuity and determination, and serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the field of submarine technology.
