EDITORS COMMENTS
John McDouall Stuart: The Intrepid Australian Explorer (1815-1866) This engraving captures the image of John McDouall Stuart, a Scottish-born Australian explorer, as he appeared in 1863 during his historic expeditions into the Australian interior. Born in the town of Balmerino, Fife, Scotland, in 1815, Stuart embarked on a series of six expeditions between 1855 and 1862, which would forever change the map of Australia. Stuart's explorations began in earnest when he joined the South Australian Company's expedition led by Edward John Eyre in 1841. However, it was not until 1858 that he set out on his first major expedition, which saw him become the first European to cross the continent of Australia from south to north. During this journey, he discovered the Finke River and reached the Gulf of Carpentaria. In 1859, Stuart led another expedition, this time in search of the elusive inland sea, which he eventually found in 1862. He named it Lake Eyre in honor of his former commander. Stuart's final expedition, in 1863, aimed to find a route from Adelaide to Darwin, and he succeeded in reaching Darwin via Alice Springs. Tragically, Stuart died by the side of the road on his return journey to Adelaide in 1866, at the age of 51. This engraving, produced in 1863, immortalizes the image of the intrepid explorer who opened up the heart of Australia to European exploration. Born in Scotland in 1815, Stuart made six expeditions into the Australian interior between 1855 and 1862, discovering Lake Eyre along the way. This engraving, produced in 1863, captures the image of the intrepid explorer during his historic journeys.
