EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative crayon portrait captures the young and vibrant John Keats in the prime of his poetic career. Dated to around 1795, the image shows Keats leaning on an elbow, his curly hair cascading over his shoulder, and a thoughtful smile playing on his lips. The poet, who would go on to become one of the most celebrated figures in English literature, was just beginning to make a name for himself at the time this portrait was created. Born in 1795 in London, Keats was a contemporary of Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, and is considered part of the Romantic poetic movement. His poetry, characterized by its intense emotion and exploration of beauty, love, and mortality, would leave a lasting impact on literature. Tragically, Keats' life was cut short when he died of tuberculosis in 1821 at the age of 25. Despite his brief life, Keats' poetic legacy endured, with works such as "Ode on a Nightingale," "Ode to a Grecian Urn," and "Endymion" continuing to be celebrated and studied to this day. This portrait offers a glimpse into the face of a poet whose words would forever change the literary landscape of England and beyond.
