1594 1672 Bishop Churchman Durham
EDITORS COMMENTS
John Cosin (1594-1672), an English churchman and Bishop of Durham, is depicted in this striking portrait. Cosin was born in Yorkshire and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he developed a deep interest in theology and ecclesiastical history. He became a fellow of the college in 1617 and was ordained a deacon in 1618. Cosin's career in the Church of England began in earnest in 1621 when he was appointed a prebendary of Durham Cathedral. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a canon in 1623 and the Dean of Durham in 1627. In 1631, Cosin was appointed Bishop of Durham by King Charles I, a position he held until his death. During his tenure as Bishop of Durham, Cosin was known for his strong commitment to the Anglican Church and his efforts to promote religious unity in the face of religious turmoil. He was a prolific writer and scholar, producing numerous works on theology, ecclesiastical history, and liturgy. Cosin's most famous work, "The Ancient Ecclesiastical Monuments of Northern England," is still considered a seminal work in the study of English church history. Despite his loyalty to the Church of England, Cosin was a vocal critic of the Laudian reforms, which sought to impose a more rigid and ceremonial form of worship. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of the clergy and the preservation of traditional church practices. This portrait of John Cosin, Bishop of Durham, captures the intellectual and spiritual depth of a man who dedicated his life to the study and practice of the Christian faith. His legacy as a scholar, writer, and Church leader continues to inspire and influence scholars and churchmen to this day.
