EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Scottish author and administrator, John Buchan, as he gazes intently into the distance during World War One. Born in 1875, Buchan was a prolific writer, best known for his adventure novels, including "The Thirty-Nine Steps," and "Greenmantle." However, his military service during the war was equally significant. Buchan served as an officer in the Intelligence Corps, using his skills as a writer to produce intelligence reports and propaganda. In this image, Buchan is seen wearing the uniform of his rank, a testament to his military service. The leather strap of his cap, slung over his shoulder, adds an air of authority and practicality. The historical context of the photograph is further emphasized by the date, 1940, inscribed at the bottom. Buchan's literary career began in earnest before the war, with his first novel, "Six Crooked Highlanders," published in 1922. However, it was his wartime experiences that influenced many of his later works, such as "The Three Hostages" and "Mr. Standfast." Despite his military duties, Buchan continued to write, often penning his novels late into the night after long days in the field. His dedication to both his country and his craft earned him the nickname "Bookman," a moniker that continues to define him as one of Scotland's most beloved authors. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of a man who straddled the worlds of literature and military service, leaving a lasting impact on both.
