John Bach McMaster: A Pioneering American Historian (1852-1932) This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage of John Bach McMaster, an influential American historian whose groundbreaking work shaped the field of early American history. Born on February 15, 1852, in Cincinnati, Ohio, McMaster dedicated his life to the pursuit of historical knowledge, becoming a respected scholar and educator. McMaster's academic career began at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1874. He continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1879. McMaster's first teaching position was at his alma mater, Miami University, where he served as a professor of history from 1880 to 1883. In 1883, McMaster accepted a position at the University of Pennsylvania, where he would spend the remainder of his career. He rose through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 1889 and serving as the chair of the history department from 1903 to 1911. McMaster's most significant contribution to the field of American history came in the form of his magnum opus, "The History of the People of the United States from the Colonial Settlements to the Present Time," published in 1897. This comprehensive work, which covered American history from the colonial period to the late 19th century, became a standard text in American universities and remains an important resource for scholars today. McMaster's dedication to his craft earned him numerous accolades, including honorary degrees from Miami University and the University of Pennsylvania. He retired from the University of Pennsylvania in 1921 but continued to write and lecture until his death on February 25, 1932. This photograph, taken in the early 20th century, captures the wisdom and intellectual rigor of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of historical truth.
