Johannes Kepler, German astronomer C017 / 7113

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), German astronomer, holding a divider used to plot distances. Kepler devised three fundamental laws of planetary motion. These laws were based on detailed observations of the planets made by himself and the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Keplers first law states that the planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths, with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse. The second law states that the closer a planet comes to the Sun, the faster it moves. Keplers third law states that the ratio of the cube of a planets mean distance from the Sun to the square of its orbital period is a constant. Newton used these ideas to formulate his theory of gravity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned German astronomer, Johannes Kepler, as he holds a divider used to plot distances. Kepler's significant contributions to the field of astronomy are imprinted in history through his three fundamental laws of planetary motion. These groundbreaking laws were formulated based on meticulous observations made by both Kepler and Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. Kepler's first law revolutionized our understanding of celestial mechanics by stating that planets orbit the Sun along elliptical paths, with the Sun occupying one focus of the ellipse. The second law further deepened our comprehension as it revealed that a planet's speed increases as it moves closer to the Sun. Finally, Kepler's third law established an unchanging ratio between a planet's mean distance from the Sun and its orbital period. It is worth noting that Newton himself drew inspiration from these revolutionary ideas when formulating his theory of gravity. This extraordinary image captures not only Kepler but also encapsulates centuries' worth of astronomical progress and scientific breakthroughs. Gary Brown skillfully immortalizes this historical figure in an exquisite illustration that pays homage to Johannes Kepler’s immense contributions to humanity’s understanding of our place within the cosmos.
