EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, also known as Johan van der Does or Janus Dousa, a prominent Dutch political leader and writer of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in 1547 in Oldenbarnevelt, a small town in the Dutch province of North Brabant, van der Does rose to prominence as a lawyer, scholar, and statesman. He was a key figure in the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and served as the Grand Pensionary of Holland from 1572 until his arrest and execution in 1619. The image shows van der Does in a somber mood, dressed in a long, fur-trimmed robe and a ruff collar typical of the late Renaissance period. He is shown holding a chain, symbolizing his imprisonment, while a quill pen and inkwell lie nearby, a reminder of his literary pursuits. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads "Janus Dousa, alias Johan van der Does, 1545-1604." Van der Does was a prolific writer, penning numerous works on political theory, history, and law. He is best known for his defense of the Dutch cause during the Revolt, which he articulated in his famous "Apology for the Government of the Netherlands," published in 1581. Despite his contributions to Dutch independence, van der Does was ultimately betrayed by his political rivals and brought to trial on charges of treason. He was sentenced to death and executed in 1619, marking the end of an era in Dutch history. This historical print offers a poignant glimpse into the life of a complex and influential figure in Dutch political and intellectual history. The chain in his hand serves as a reminder of the political turmoil and intrigue that marked his career, while the quill and inkwell speak to his enduring legacy as a writer and scholar.
