Born on January 12, 1852, in Cavaillon, France, Joffre rose through the ranks of the French military to become one of the most decorated and respected commanders in history. He served in the Franco-Prussian War, the Indochina War, and played a pivotal role in the planning and execution of the Schlieffen Plan during World War I. Despite his military successes, Joffre was not immune to personal loss. He endured the tragic deaths of his wife and two sons during his career.
