This image captures the enigmatic figure of Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce, the pioneering French physicist and inventor, as he stands before a large, covered easel in his studio during the 1830s. Niépce is best known for his groundbreaking achievement in the annals of photographic history: he is credited with producing the world's first photograph in 1826, an image titled "View from the Window at Le Gras." The photographic process he developed, which he called heliography, utilized a bitumen of Judea coating on a pewter plate, which was exposed to sunlight for several hours to create an image.
