EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of Japanese history, Empress Jingu (r. 200-218 CE) is depicted urging her husband, Emperor Chuai (r. 196-200 CE), to direct his efforts towards expanding Japan's influence to the western regions. The scene takes place during the latter half of the 3rd century CE, a time when Japan was undergoing significant political and cultural transformations. Empress Jingu, a formidable and influential figure in Japanese history, is shown in regal attire, with a determined expression on her face as she implores her husband to heed her advice. However, Emperor Chuai, who is depicted as a weak and indecisive ruler, is shown turning a deaf ear to his wife's pleas. Frustrated by her husband's unwillingness to act, Empress Jingu reportedly turned to the gods for assistance. According to legend, the gods, angered by Emperor Chuai's lack of leadership, intervened and slayed him. With her husband dead, Empress Jingu assumed the throne and set about strengthening Japan's ties with the western regions, particularly with the kingdom of Goguryeo in present-day Korea. This historic event marked a significant turning point in Japanese history, as it paved the way for increased diplomatic and cultural exchanges between Japan and the Korean peninsula. Empress Jingu's successful diplomacy with Goguryeo helped establish a friendly relationship between the two nations, which would last for centuries to come. This striking print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich and complex history of Japan's early imperial period. The image captures the drama and intrigue of the time, as well as the enduring legacy of Empress Jingu as a powerful and visionary leader.
