EDITORS COMMENTS
Jimmy Durante, the beloved American comedian and entertainer, is seen in this photograph taken during his tenure at MGM in the late 1940s. Born on February 10, 1893, in New York City, Durante began his career in vaudeville as a singer and comedian, quickly gaining recognition for his distinctive nasal voice and expressive, exaggerated facial features, particularly his iconic schnozzle. By the 1930s, Durante had become a household name in radio, film, and television. He made his film debut in 1930's "All Quiet on the Western Front" and went on to appear in over 150 films throughout his career. His most memorable roles include that of the wise-cracking, lovable sidekick in the "Bellbottoms" series with Laurel and Hardy and as the voice of the broomstick horse, Barnaby, in Disney's "Fantasia." In this photograph, Durante is seen in classic form, performing for an adoring audience. His signature style of delivery, with its exaggerated inflections and rapid-fire jokes, is on full display. The image captures the essence of a man who brought joy and laughter to generations of audiences, both on the vaudeville stage and in the movies. Durante's career spanned over four decades, from the early days of vaudeville to the dawn of television. He continued to perform until his death on January 29, 1980, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most beloved and enduring figures in American entertainment history.
