EDITORS COMMENTS

Francesc Eiximenis, a Franciscan friar and prolific writer, is depicted in this 15th-century print titled "Lo Cresti" or "The Christian." Born in Valencia, Spain, in 1327, Eiximenis dedicated his life to the study and dissemination of Christian doctrine. He is considered one of the most important figures in Valencian literature and is known for his extensive works that covered various aspects of the Christian faith. This print is taken from the third book of Eiximenis' most famous work, "Lo Crestià," also known as "The Book of the Order of Christ." Completed in 1409, just before his death, this monumental work is a comprehensive guide to the Christian life, covering topics such as prayer, penance, the sacraments, and the virtues. Eiximenis' influence extended beyond the Iberian Peninsula, and his works were translated into several languages, spreading the message of Christianity throughout Europe. The Franciscan friar's profound impact on the religious and intellectual landscape of his time is evident in this striking print, which portrays him as a wise and pious man, deeply committed to his faith and his mission to spread its teachings. The intricate details of the print, from Eiximenis' flowing robes to the intricate patterns adorning the background, serve as a testament to the artistic and cultural richness of the late medieval period. This image offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of a remarkable figure who continues to inspire and captivate scholars and readers alike.
