Newman, who was born into an Anglican family, became a prominent figure in the Oxford Movement, a religious and social movement within the Church of England in the 19th century that sought to re-establish the Church's historic catholic traditions. In 1845, Newman converted to Roman Catholicism, a decision that caused a significant stir in both the Anglican and Catholic communities. He was received into the Catholic Church by Cardinal Wiseman, the Archbishop of Westminster, in a ceremony that took place at the Oratory in Birmingham, England.
