1797 1875 Archaeologist Egyptologist Gardner Stereo Wilkinson

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stereo card depicts Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875), an esteemed archaeologist and Egyptologist of the 19th century. Wilkinson's groundbreaking work in the field of Egyptian antiquities paved the way for a greater understanding of ancient Egyptian culture and history. Born on October 30, 1797, in London, England, Wilkinson developed an early interest in Egyptology. He embarked on his first archaeological expedition to Egypt in 1821, accompanied by the renowned painter Richard William Seton-Watson. During this journey, Wilkinson made significant discoveries, including the tomb of the ancient Egyptian priest Ankh-hep-sen-wepet-nefer-ka-Re, also known as Nefertari, the wife of Ramesses II. Wilkinson's extensive knowledge of the Egyptian language and culture, as well as his meticulous recording of inscriptions and artifacts, set him apart from his contemporaries. He was one of the first scholars to recognize the importance of hieroglyphics as a means of deciphering the ancient Egyptian script. In 1833, Wilkinson was knighted by King William IV for his contributions to archaeology and Egyptology. He continued to excavate and study in Egypt until his retirement in 1855. His seminal works, including "The Monuments of Egypt and Nubia," remain influential in the field to this day. This stereo card, likely taken between 1860 and 1875, captures Wilkinson in profile, showcasing his distinguished appearance and the wisdom of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge. The image serves as a testament to Wilkinson's enduring legacy in the world of archaeology and Egyptology.
