In this evocative image from the Bible's New Testament, Joseph, accompanied by his young wife Mary and the infant Jesus, makes his way into Egypt, guided by an angel in a dream. The year was likely around 1 BC, and the family was seeking refuge from the wrath of King Herod, who, upon hearing of Jesus' birth and being told by the Magi that the newborn King of the Jews had been born in Bethlehem, became consumed with jealousy and issued a decree to kill all the male infants in and around Bethlehem in an attempt to eliminate the perceived threat to his throne. Joseph, a descendant of the House of David, was a direct heir to the throne and thus posed a potential danger to Herod's rule. Warned in a dream by the angel, Joseph and his family set out on a perilous journey to Egypt, where they would remain until Herod's death and the return of the angel in another dream, instructing them to return to Israel. This historical event, recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, is a poignant reminder of the tumultuous circumstances surrounding the early childhood of Jesus.
