EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the pivotal moment in the New Testament when Jesus of Nazareth, the man believed by Christians to be the Son of God, was presented before the people during his trial. The historical event, as recounted in all four Gospels, took place circa 30 AD in Jerusalem. Jesus, wearing a simple robe and with an expression of calm resolve, stands before the crowd, who are gathered in the courtyard of the Roman Praetorium. The Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, stands to the right of Jesus, holding a scroll, as he asks the people a fateful question: "Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?" Barabbas, a notorious thief and insurrectionist, is shown in the background, bound and wearing a rough tunic. The people, swayed by the religious leaders who have instigated the trial, clamor for Barabbas' release. "Crucify him! Crucify him!" they cry out, rejecting the offer to spare the life of the man they believe to be the King of the Jews. The scene is filled with tension and drama, as the fate of Jesus hangs in the balance. The people's decision to release Barabbas and condemn Jesus to a painful and humiliating death on the cross would ultimately seal his destiny as the Savior of mankind, according to Christian belief. This powerful and moving print offers a glimpse into one of the most significant moments in religious and historical events, and serves as a reminder of the profound impact of human choice on the course of history.
