Jeanne de Valois, Daughter of Louis XI and Queen Consort of Louis XII: A Tale of Love, Annulment, and Devotion This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Jeanne de Valois (1464-1505), the illegitimate daughter of King Louis XI of France, who rose to become Queen Consort of Louis XII. Their marriage, however, was short-lived due to a papal decree declaring it invalid because of Jeanne's infirmity. Born in 1464, Jeanne de Valois was the product of her father's liaison with Marie de Bourbon. Despite her humble beginnings, she was raised in the royal court and married Louis XII in 1498, at the age of 34. Their union was intended to strengthen the political alliance between the Valois and the Bourbon families. However, the marriage was annulled in 1499, after only a few months, due to a papal decree declaring Jeanne's infertility a hindrance to the production of a male heir. Devastated by the annulment, Jeanne retreated to a contemplative life, dedicating herself to prayer and charitable works. In 1504, with the support of King Louis XII, she founded the Monastery of the Humility of the Blessed Virgin in Montmartre, Paris. This contemplative order, known as the "Carmelites of Montmartre," became renowned for its strict observance of the Rule of St. Carmel and its emphasis on prayer and penance. Jeanne de Valois' legacy extends beyond her brief reign as queen. Her devotion to the religious life and her founding of the Carmelites of Montmartre have earned her the title of "Saint Jeanne de Valois." This portrait, with its solemn expression and regal bearing, serves as a poignant reminder of her remarkable life and enduring impact on French history.
