EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic print, Jeanne de Navarre, the queen of Navarre, is depicted in regal attire as she weds Philippe IV, the King of France, in a grand and ceremonious event that united the kingdoms of France and Navarre in the early 14th century. The year was circa 1305, and the union of these two powerful monarchies marked a significant moment in European history. Jeanne de Navarre, a formidable and intelligent queen, had come to the throne following the death of her father, Henry II of Navarre, in 1314. However, her reign was not without challenges. One such challenge came in the form of Henri, comte de Bar, who was the son-in-law of Edward I of England and a powerful nobleman in his own right. Henri, seeking to expand his own power, rebelled against Jeanne de Navarre and invaded Navarre with an army. However, the queen was not one to be easily intimidated. She rallied her forces and met Henri's army in battle. In a stunning turn of events, Jeanne de Navarre emerged victorious, and Henri was captured and imprisoned. The defeat of Henri de Bar solidified Jeanne de Navarre's position as a strong and capable ruler, and her marriage to Philippe IV further strengthened the alliance between France and Navarre. The print captures the moment of their union, with the two monarchs standing before each other, their hands joined in a symbolic gesture of unity and peace. This historic print offers a glimpse into the complex political landscape of medieval Europe and the remarkable story of Jeanne de Navarre, a queen who defied the odds and held her own against powerful adversaries. The intricate details of the print, from the elaborate costumes to the intricate patterns of the tapestries, transport us back in time to an era of chivalry, intrigue, and political maneuvering.
