EDITORS COMMENTS
This idealised print of Jeanne D'Arc, or Joan of Arc, captures the legendary warrior's mystical and heroic spirit. Dressed in full armor and mounted on her horse, Joan is depicted fulfilling the prophecy made by Merlin centuries prior. The prophecy foretold that a virgin would come whose horse would trample the backs of bowmen, and Joan's victories on the battlefield against overwhelming odds made her a symbol of divine intervention and French national pride. The scene portrayed in this print likely references the Battle of Orléans in 1429, where Joan's leadership and military prowess turned the tide of the Hundred Years' War in favor of the French. With her standard bearer holding aloft the banner of St. George, Joan rides forth, her face determined and resolute. The bowmen beneath her horse are shown in disarray, their backs trampled by the animal's hooves. Jeanne D'Arc's story is one of the most enduring in European history, and this print serves as a testament to her legendary status. Born in 1412 in Domrémy, France, Joan claimed to have received divine visions from St. Catherine and St. Margaret, urging her to lead the French army against the English. Her victories in battle earned her the moniker "The Maid of Orléans," and her capture and trial by the English in 1431 ultimately led to her execution at the stake. Despite her tragic end, Joan's legacy as a national heroine and a symbol of French resistance endures to this day.
