EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and poignant photograph captures the moment just before the assassination of Jean Jaurès, a towering figure in French political history. Born on September 3, 1859, Jaurès was a French socialist statesman and journalist who founded and edited the influential daily newspaper, L'Humanité. A passionate advocate for peace and social justice, Jaurès was a vocal opponent of militarism and war. On the evening of July 31, 1914, as tensions between France and Germany escalated towards war, Jaurès gathered with fellow politicians and journalists at the Café du Croissant in Paris to discuss the crisis. In this photograph, taken moments before his tragic death, Jaurès is seen in deep conversation with a group of men, including his close friend and fellow socialist leader, Léon Blum. Despite the looming threat of war, Jaurès remained committed to finding a peaceful solution. However, his efforts were cut short when he was assassinated by Raoul Villain, a nationalist extremist, at around 10:15 pm that evening. Jaurès' assassination sent shockwaves through France and the international community, and his death is widely regarded as a turning point in the lead-up to World War I. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Jaurès' legacy as a champion of peace and social justice, and his tragic and untimely end. The image of Jaurès in deep conversation with his colleagues, just hours before his death, underscores the urgency of the political crisis that consumed Europe in 1914, and the high stakes involved in the pursuit of peace.
