This evocative Carte de Visite captures the enigmatic and intellectual presence of Victorian English writer, Jean Ingelow. Dressed in a dark, high-necked gown with a delicate ribbon detail at the throat, Ingelow gazes intently into the distance, her expressive profile revealing a deep concentration and intensity. The photograph, taken in the late 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable woman who defied societal expectations and made a name for herself as a successful author during a time when women's literary achievements were not yet commonplace. Born in 1820, Ingelow's literary career began in earnest in the 1850s, with the publication of her first collection of poems, "Mops and the Beatles." Her works, which often explored themes of love, loss, and the supernatural, gained widespread acclaim and established her as a leading figure in the literary world. Ingelow's most famous work, "The Broken Heart," was published in 1863 and remains a classic of Victorian literature. Despite her success, Ingelow's personal life was marked by tragedy. She never married and devoted herself to her writing, but was plagued by ill health and financial difficulties. Her later years were spent in relative obscurity, and she died in 1897, at the age of 77.
