EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking historical print depicts Jean de Montfort, Duke of Brittany, also known as Jean IV or Jean the Good (1339-1399). Montfort's military prowess and political acumen made him a significant figure in the Hundred Years War between England and France during the late 14th century. Montfort is shown here in full armor, wearing a helmet adorned with the distinctive white fleur-de-lis of Brittany, which can also be seen on the banner held by his attendant. The helmet's crest features a pair of heraldic feathers, symbolizing the House of Montfort. In his right hand, Montfort holds a long sword, a common weapon of the time used for both slashing and thrusting attacks. Montfort's reign as Duke of Brittany, which began in 1364, was marked by his successful defense of the duchy against English encroachment. He also expanded Brittany's territories through strategic marriages and alliances. Montfort's rule was not without challenges, however, as he faced internal rebellions and conflicts with neighboring powers. This print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the armor and weaponry of a medieval soldier of high rank. The intricate details of Montfort's armor, from the lacing on his gauntlets to the delicate engravings on his helmet, reveal the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans who created it. The print also serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of medieval Europe and the important role that military might played in shaping its history.
