Perry, commanding officer of the United States Navy's Pacific Squadron, stands proudly on the deck of the U.S.S. Susquehanna as he negotiates a groundbreaking treaty with Japanese officials. The year was 1854, and after a long period of self-imposed isolation, Japan had agreed to open its doors to the outside world and engage in diplomatic and commercial relations with other nations. Perry's arrival in Japan with his fleet of black-painted warships, known as "Perry's Black Ships," had left a profound impact on the Japanese people. After several months of negotiations, the Treaty of Kanagawa was signed on January 27, 1854.
