EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the regal presence of James II, also known as James VII of Scotland, the second surviving son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria. Born in 1633, James was raised in exile during his father's reign and later served as Lord High Admiral of the English fleet under his older brother, Charles II. James's Catholic faith and his marriage to Anne Hyde, a Protestant, caused controversy and tension during his brother's reign. After Charles II's death in 1685, James ascended to the throne of England and Scotland. His reign was marked by religious conflict and political instability, culminating in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which led to his overthrow and the invitation of William III and Mary II to rule jointly. In this portrait, James II is depicted in full regalia, wearing a voluminous red velvet robe and a lace jabot, or cravat, adorned with a star of the Order of the Garter. His white wig, a sign of his monarchical status, is carefully arranged and powdered. Henrietta Maria, his mother, is believed to have been the artist of this portrait, which adds an intimate touch to the image. The bottomed, or plain, background emphasizes the focus on James's face and attire, conveying a sense of grandeur and authority. As the last Catholic monarch of England, James II's reign marked a significant turning point in the country's history. This portrait offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a complex and controversial figure who played a pivotal role in shaping the political and religious landscape of England and Scotland.
