This evocative portrait captures the regal presence of James I (1566-1625), also known as James VI of Scotland, during his reign as King of England and King of Scotland. The image, created during the early years of his English rule between 1603 and 1625, showcases James's stature and authority as a monarch. Born in Scotland, James ascended to the Scottish throne at the age of just thirteen months, following the death of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots. He spent much of his youth in exile in England before returning to Scotland in 1567. James's reign in Scotland was marked by religious and political instability, but he managed to establish a degree of stability and peace during his later years. In 1603, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England, James became the first monarch to rule both England and Scotland. His English reign was characterized by his efforts to promote unity between the two countries, as well as his support for the arts and literature. James was also a patron of the sciences and founded the first English colony in Virginia in 1607. This portrait, likely created during James's English reign, depicts him in grand attire, wearing a velvet doublet and a fur-lined cloak.
