This vibrant and detailed color print depicts James I of England and I of Scotland, also known as Jaques I or the "King of Great Britain," who reigned from 1603 until his death in 1625. Born in Scotland in 1566, James ascended to the throne of Scotland at the age of thirteen following the death of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots. He spent most of his youth in exile in England, where he was raised under the tutelage of Queen Elizabeth I. Upon Elizabeth's death in 1603, James succeeded her as king of England and was crowned on July 25, 1603, in Westminster Abbey. As king, James sought to unite England and Scotland under a single monarchy, a goal that had eluded his predecessors for centuries. He faced numerous challenges, including religious tensions between Protestants and Catholics, as well as conflicts with Parliament over financial and political matters. James is depicted in this print wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, a prestigious English chivalric order, and holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other. The globe symbolizes his role as monarch of both England and Scotland, as well as his aspirations for a broader imperial reach. The print also includes the motto of the Order of the Garter, "Honor and Loyalty," which reflects the values that James sought to instill in his subjects. Despite his efforts to unite the two kingdoms, James's reign was marked by political instability and conflict. He was eventually succeeded by his son, Charles I, who faced even greater challenges and ultimately led to the English Civil War. Nonetheless, James's legacy as a monarch who sought to bring Scotland and England closer together remains an important chapter in the history of both nations.
