Between 1860 and 1863, Grant, along with his English counterpart John Hanning Speke, embarked on an historic journey to solve the centuries-old mystery of the Nile's origin. The two explorers had been sent by the Royal Geographical Society to build upon the work of earlier explorers, such as Sir Richard Burton and Speke's own previous expedition. Grant, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, had served in the British Army prior to his career as an explorer. His military background proved invaluable during the arduous journey, as the team faced numerous challenges, including treacherous terrain, hostile tribes, and limited resources. Despite these obstacles, Grant and Speke persevered, eventually reaching the shores of Lake Victoria Nyanza in 1862.
