EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the Scottish soldier and explorer, Captain James Augustus Grant (1827-1892), during his famous expedition to discover the source of the Nile River. Between 1860 and 1863, Grant, along with his English counterpart John Hanning Speke, embarked on an historic journey to solve the centuries-old mystery of the Nile's origin. The two explorers had been sent by the Royal Geographical Society to build upon the work of earlier explorers, such as Sir Richard Burton and Speke's own previous expedition. Grant, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, had served in the British Army prior to his career as an explorer. His military background proved invaluable during the arduous journey, as the team faced numerous challenges, including treacherous terrain, hostile tribes, and limited resources. Despite these obstacles, Grant and Speke persevered, eventually reaching the shores of Lake Victoria Nyanza in 1862. They discovered that the lake was, in fact, the source of the Nile, putting an end to centuries of speculation and misconceptions. Their findings were met with skepticism at first, but were eventually confirmed by later expeditions. This engraving, created in 1863, captures Grant in his military uniform, reflecting his past as a soldier and his role as a leader on the ground during the expedition. The importance of their discovery is evident in the historical significance of the image, and Grant's place in the annals of exploration history is secure. This print is a testament to the spirit of adventure and the determination of these two explorers, who, through their efforts, finally put to rest the question of the Nile's source. Grant's legacy as a Scottish hero and a pioneering explorer continues to inspire generations.
