EDITORS COMMENTS
This miniature portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Joachim Murat, a French cavalry commander who rose to prominence under the Napoleonic regime. Born in 1767 in Italy, Murat joined the French army in 1792 and quickly distinguished himself as a skilled military tactician. In 1808, Murat was unexpectedly appointed King of Naples under the title Joachim I, a position he held until his defeat by the Austrians in 1815. The dark background of this oval-shaped miniature emphasizes the intensity of Murat's piercing gaze, his strong jawline, and the distinctive wave of white hair that frames his face. The round shape of the portrait highlights the regal bearing of this unexpected monarch, who ruled over the Kingdom of Naples with a firm hand. Murat's military career began during the French Revolution, and he played a key role in the campaigns of 1805 and 1806, particularly at the Battle of Austerlitz. He was a trusted ally of Napoleon Bonaparte, and when the latter appointed him King of Naples, Murat embraced the role with enthusiasm, modernizing the kingdom and implementing reforms. However, Murat's reign was short-lived. In 1815, after Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo, the Austrians invaded Naples, and Murat was forced to abdicate. He was later exiled to Corsica, where he was eventually captured and executed in 1815. Despite his tragic end, Murat's legacy as a military commander and unexpected monarch remains an intriguing chapter in European history. This exquisite miniature portrait offers a glimpse into the complex and fascinating life of this enigmatic figure.
