EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the devastating events that unfolded in the Turkish city of Izmir in September 1922. Following Turkey's defeat in World War 1, the city was ceded to Greece in 1920 as part of the Treaty of Sèvres. However, the Turkish National Movement, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, sought to reclaim their land. In August 1922, the Turkish army launched an offensive against the Greek forces occupying Izmir. The ensuing conflict resulted in widespread destruction and chaos. As the Turkish forces approached the city, the Greek population, fearing for their lives, began to flee en masse. The situation escalated into a tragic and chaotic scene, with reports of looting, arson, and violence against the Greek population. This photograph, taken in September 1922, shows the city of Izmir engulfed in flames. The once vibrant and bustling streets are now reduced to ashes, with the blackened ruins of buildings stretching as far as the eye can see. The Greek population, having fled the city, can be seen in the distance, making their way towards the safety of the harbor. The events of 1922 marked a turning point in the history of Izmir and Turkey as a whole. The city was eventually rebuilt, and today it stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people. However, the memories of the destruction and loss of life that occurred during those turbulent times remain etched in the collective consciousness of the city and its inhabitants." This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of Izmir and the Turkish-Greek relationship. It is a powerful image that speaks to the human capacity for both destruction and resilience, and the enduring power of history to shape our present.
