EDITORS COMMENTS
July 1940: A Moment in History - Italians Advance into Kurmuk, Sudan This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Italian campaign in East Africa during World War II. The scene unfolds in the Sudanese town of Kurmuk, where Italian forces continue their successful advance, having already seized control of much of the region. The image shows a group of Italian soldiers, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, advancing through the ruins of a once-proud African village. In the foreground, a soldier hurls a grenade towards an unseen enemy, his expression focused and determined. Smoke rises from the destroyed buildings behind him, a stark reminder of the destruction and chaos that war brings. The Italian campaign in East Africa, also known as the Italian-Abyssinian War, began in October 1935 and lasted until May 1936. However, it was not until the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 that the Allied Powers, including the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, began to take a serious interest in the region. The Italians, under the leadership of General Rodolfo Graziani, had made significant gains in the early months of 1940, capturing the key towns of Kassala, Metemma, and Gallabat. The successful Italian advance into Kurmuk, as depicted in this photograph, marked a turning point in the conflict. The Allied forces, led by General Archibald Wavell, began to push back, eventually leading to the Italians' defeat and the end of their colonial rule in Africa. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the events that shaped the history of Africa and the world during the 20th century. It offers a glimpse into a time of war, conflict, and change, and serves as a testament to the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this far-off land.
