EDITORS COMMENTS
Iroquois: The Unforgettable Champion of the 1881 Derby and St. Leger Races This photograph captures the grandeur and majesty of Iroquois, the legendary racehorse who made history in 1881 by winning both the prestigious Epsom Derby and the St. Leger Stakes. Iroquois, a chestnut Thoroughbred, is depicted here in all his glory, with his powerful muscles rippling beneath his sleek coat and his ears pricked forward in alertness. The Derby, held at Epsom Downs in Surrey, England, is the oldest and most famous flat horse race in the world. Iroquois, ridden by jockey Fred Archer, won the race by a length and a half, defeating his closest competitor, Bend Or. The victory made Archer the first jockey to win the Derby and the St. Leger in the same year, a feat that would not be repeated until 1970. The St. Leger Stakes, held at Doncaster Racecourse in Yorkshire, is the oldest classic horse race in the world, dating back to 1776. Iroquois, who was trained by Samuel Rimington, won the race by a length, making him the first horse to win the Triple Crown of British horse racing – the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby, and the St. Leger – in the same season. Iroquois's victories were all the more remarkable given that he was a relatively late developer, not making his racing debut until he was four years old. His success on the track cemented his place in racing history and earned him a devoted following. Today, Iroquois is remembered not only for his impressive racing achievements but also for his gentle disposition and his striking appearance. This photograph is a testament to his enduring legacy and the thrill of the sport of horse racing.
