Jigsaw Puzzles from Mary Evans Picture Library
Iraq - Kut-Al-Imara - Sultan Mehmed V Reshad
Iraq - Kut (Kut-Al-Imara) - at this stage still part of the Ottoman Empire - with inset portrait of Sultan Mehmed Reshad V. This postcard commemorates the final surrender of the British to Turkish forces at the Siege of Kut on 29th April 1916. Initially, the British Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, led by General Townshend had occupied the town (September, 1915), but the Turks, under their commander, the German Field Marshal Baron von der Goltz, arrived and began a siege with Townsend trapped. Around 23, 000 British and Indian soldiers died in the attempts to retake Kut, probably the worst loss of life for the British away from Europe during the First World War. Date: circa 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard image captures the historical significance of the Siege of Kut-al-Amara during the First World War. The photograph, taken circa 1917, shows the harbor town of Kut in present-day Iraq, which at the time was still part of the Ottoman Empire. The inset portrait at the bottom left of the postcard features Sultan Mehmed V Reshad, who ruled the Ottoman Empire during the final stages of the siege. The Siege of Kut began in December 1915 when the British Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, led by General Townshend, occupied the town. However, their victory was short-lived as the Turkish forces, commanded by the German Field Marshal Baron von der Goltz, arrived and laid siege to the town. The British and Indian soldiers were trapped, and the attempts to retake Kut resulted in around 23,000 fatalities, making it one of the worst losses of life for the British away from Europe during the First World War. The image on the postcard depicts the waterfront of Kut, with the Ottoman flag flying proudly from the fortress. The harbor, which played a crucial role in the siege, is visible in the background. The date of the surrender, 29th April 1916, is inscribed at the bottom right of the postcard, commemorating the end of this significant chapter in the history of the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire.
