A favorable wind was necessary to enable their journey, but the winds were unfavorable, and the fleet remained anchored. Enter the goddess Artemis. She demanded a sacrifice in exchange for the wind, and Agamemnon, the Greek leader, was faced with an impossible choice. He was forced to sacrifice his own daughter, Iphigenia, to appease the goddess. Fortunately, the story takes a turn for the better. Just as Iphigenia is about to be sacrificed, Artemis intervenes and saves her. She is taken to Tauris, where she becomes a priestess in the temple of Artemis. The Greeks, finally, are able to set sail for Troy, their journey enabled by the favor of the gods.
