November 1940: A Tragic Turn in the East African Campaign This poignant photograph captures the aftermath of a devastating loss for the Allied forces during the East African Campaign of World War II. The Indian Troopship, a vessel bringing much-needed reinforcements to support the Allied campaign against the Italians, lies sunk in the Red Sea following an attack by the Italian navy. The East African Campaign, which began in September 1940, was a significant theatre of the Second World War. The Allied forces, led primarily by the British, aimed to oust the Italians from their colonies in East Africa – Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, and Italian Ethiopia. The arrival of Indian troops was crucial to bolstering the Allied ranks and turning the tide of the conflict. However, on the night of November 13, 1940, the Italian navy, under the command of Admiral Bergamini, launched a surprise attack on the Indian Troopship and several other Allied vessels in the Red Sea. The Italian submarine 'Barbarigo' torpedoed the troopship, resulting in the tragic loss of hundreds of lives and a significant setback for the Allied forces. This historical photograph is a stark reminder of the events that unfolded during this critical period in World War II. The Indian Troopship, filled with soldiers eager to support their allies and defend their cause, met an untimely end in the Red Sea. The attack marked a turning point in the East African Campaign, as the Allied forces regrouped and eventually emerged victorious in May 1941. This photograph serves as a testament to the sacrifices made by the troops and the importance of their contributions to the war effort.
