EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, taken from a print by French artist Jean-Baptiste Geffroy, depicts a pivotal moment in the ancient Greek epic poem, The Iliad, as presented in Jean Racine's renowned play, Iphigenie en Aulide. The scene captures the poignant reunion between the legendary hero Achilles and his sister Deianira, as they embrace before the altar of Artemis. Achilles, renowned for his exceptional strength and courage, had been banished from his homeland and the Greek army after a dispute with King Agamemnon. Desperate to win him back, the goddess Artemis intervened, and Iphigenie, the daughter of King Agamemnon, was offered as a sacrifice to the goddess to appease her wrath. However, at the last moment, Artemis intervened again and saved Iphigenie from being sacrificed, replacing her with a deer on the altar. In this print, Achilles, dressed in full armor, is shown with tears in his eyes as he embraces his sister, who is dressed in traditional Greek robes. The expression on their faces conveys a deep sense of relief, joy, and love. The background is filled with the chaos of war, with soldiers and horses in the distance, emphasizing the contrast between the peace and tranquility of the reunion and the violence and turmoil of the battlefield. Racine's play Iphigenie en Aulide, first performed in 1674, is a masterful adaptation of the Iliad, exploring themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the power of the gods. This print, with its powerful imagery and emotional depth, provides a visual representation of one of the most memorable scenes from this classic work of literature.
