This image captures Russian-born French actress Ida Rubinstein (1885-1960) in the role of Saint Sebastian in Gabriele d'Annunzio's Le martyre de Saint Sebastien, staged in Paris in 1911. The production, which marked Rubinstein's debut as a producer, was a groundbreaking theatrical event that showcased her innovative approach to dance and visual spectacle. Born into a wealthy family, Rubinstein was drawn to the arts from an early age and trained in ballet and mime. She made her stage debut in 1907 and quickly gained a reputation for her unconventional interpretations of classical roles.
