This evocative print depicts the Hussite Victory, a pivotal moment in the history of the Czech Republic that took place on the Vitkov Hill outside Prague in July 1420. The Hussites, led by the charismatic military commander Jan Ziska, are seen triumphantly raising their flags and banners after their decisive defeat of the Catholic army of King Sigismund of Hungary and Germany. The Hussite movement, named after its founder Jan Hus, had emerged in the late 14th century as a reformist religious and political movement in Bohemia, which was then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Hus and his followers challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and called for a return to the simple, biblical faith of the early Christians. Their ideas gained widespread support among the Czech people, particularly the peasantry, who saw the Church as an oppressive institution. In response, the Catholic Church launched a campaign to suppress the Hussites, culminating in the Battle of Vitkov Hill. The Hussites, though outnumbered and outmatched in terms of weaponry, were driven by their religious fervor and their desire for freedom from Church domination. They employed unconventional tactics, such as the use of wagons fortified with wooden shields and armed with arrows and stones, which proved effective against the heavily armored knights of the Catholic army. The Hussite Victory marked a turning point in the Hussite Wars, which continued until 1436. It solidified the Hussites' position as a formidable political and military force in Bohemia and paved the way for the eventual recognition of the Hussite faith as the official religion of the Czech lands.
