Born on March 25, 1833, in County Cork, Ireland, Gough rose through the ranks of the British Army, serving in various capacities during the Indian Mutiny, the Second Anglo-Afghan War, and the Second Boer War. Despite initial successes, Gough's campaign ultimately ended in failure, and he was replaced by General Roberts.
