EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tumultuous events of June 1611, when Henry Hudson's crew, disillusioned and desperate after years of fruitless exploration for a Northwest Passage to Asia, staged a mutiny against their leader. The print depicts the moment of crisis as Hudson and his sons, standing at the bow of their ship, the "Half Moon," are set adrift in a small boat by their mutinous crew. Henry Hudson, an experienced English explorer and navigator, had been commissioned by the Muscovy Company to find a new route to Asia via the North Atlantic. He had already discovered the Hudson River in 1609, but his subsequent voyages had yielded little in the way of valuable discoveries or trade. Frustration and desperation among the crew grew, and when they reached James Bay in present-day Canada, they had had enough. The mutiny was led by the second mate, Robert Juet, who took command of the "Half Moon" and sailed it back to England. Hudson, his wife, and seven loyal crew members were cast adrift in a small boat with only a compass, a quadrant, and a few supplies. They were eventually rescued by a Dutch whaling ship, but Hudson's reputation was ruined, and he died in poverty in England in 1611. This historical print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a vivid and dramatic representation of a pivotal moment in American history. The mutiny and subsequent events marked the end of Hudson's explorations and helped shape the future of European settlement in the New World.
