EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration from 1946 showcases the top-secret design proposal for HMS Habbakuk (centre), an innovative and groundbreaking concept for a giant aircraft-carrier, built primarily of ice and wood pulp. Proposed in 1942 by British inventor Geoffrey Pyke, this unconventional design was put forward as a potential secret weapon during the Second World War. The Habbakuk carrier was intended to be larger than any conventional vessel of its time, with the ability to support numerous aircraft and provide a mobile base for long-range operations. However, the practicalities of constructing such a vessel proved to be too great for the British war effort at the time. The Habbakuk project involved importing vast quantities of ice from the Arctic and processing it with wood pulp to create a strong and durable material for the carrier's hull. Despite the ambitious vision, the project was ultimately abandoned due to the significant resources and infrastructure required to bring it to fruition. In the illustration, the Habbakuk design is shown next to HMS Indefatigable (right), a large British aircraft-carrier built using conventional materials, to provide a sense of scale and comparison. The HMS Indefatigable, launched in 1946, was a formidable vessel in its own right and served in the Royal Navy until 1959. The Habbakuk project remains an intriguing footnote in the history of naval warfare, showcasing the ingenuity and resourcefulness of those who sought to push the boundaries of what was possible during wartime.
