EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the HMS Glorious, a British Royal Navy Courageous-class cruiser that saw active service during the First World War. Launched in 1916, the HMS Glorious was one of the largest and most powerful cruisers of her time. However, as the nature of naval warfare evolved, the need for aircraft at sea became increasingly apparent. In the late 1920s, the HMS Glorious was converted into an aircraft carrier, marking a significant turning point in her history. During the 1920s and 1930s, the HMS Glorious was a familiar sight on the world's seas, leading the way in the development of aircraft carrier technology. With a displacement of over 12,000 tons and a top speed of 32 knots, she was a formidable presence on the water. The smoke rising from her funnels is a testament to her power and the intensity of her operations. Tragically, the HMS Glorious's illustrious career came to an end in 1940 during the Second World War. She was sunk in the North Atlantic by German aircraft while attempting to evacuate British troops from Norway. The loss of the HMS Glorious was a significant blow to the Royal Navy and a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict. This photograph, taken in the 1920s or 1930s, captures the HMS Glorious in her prime, a symbol of British naval power and innovation during a time of great upheaval and change.
