H. M. Stanleys meeting with Forest Pygmies, Central Africa
Engraving showing Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), the Anglo-America explorer and journalist, meeting with some forest pygmies, during one of his expeditions to Central Africa. This image shows the pygmies eating snake round a large cooking pot. In October 1869, Stanley was sent by James Gordon Bennett (the owner of the New York Herald) to find Dr. David Livingstone, who had been exploring central Africa for several years without passing any communication to Europe. In 1871 Stanley found Livingstone at Ujiji, Tanganika, and with it also, fame and some fortune. Stanley led several further expeditions to Africa, the last of these in 1886 to find and relieve Emin Pasha. In 1892 he took British citizenship and was Unionist MP for Lambeth between 1895 and 1900

"This engraving captures a pivotal moment in the exploratory history of Central Africa, as Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) meets with forest pygmies during one of his numerous expeditions. The image, taken from ILL, shows Stanley in the company of pygmies as they eat a snake around a large cooking pot. In October 1869, Stanley was sent by James Gordon Bennett, the owner of the New York Herald, on a mission to find the renowned Scottish explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, who had been exploring Central Africa for several years without any communication to Europe. In 1871, Stanley's successful encounter with Livingstone at Ujiji, Tanganyika, brought both men fame and fortune. Stanley's subsequent expeditions included one in 1886 to find and relieve Emin Pasha. In 1892, Stanley took British citizenship and served as Unionist MP for Lambeth from 1895 to 1900. This historical image, which depicts the encounter between Stanley and the pygmies, is a testament to the exploratory spirit of the late 19th century and the significant impact of European exploration on Africa."
